Here in the Philippines, Christmas celebration starts nine days before Christmas. But some of us start to decorate our house on the last weeks of November. We decorate our house with Christmas lights, Christmas tree and colorful lanterns. These lanterns are hanged everywhere. You can see them in the windows, doors and porches, and even in the trees. Most of the lanterns were made in the shape a star that symbolizes the star that guided the shepherds and wise men to where Jesus was born. These lanterns are made out of wire, bamboo, and colorful papers. Here in the Philippines it is often called “parols.”A tradition during Christmas is caroling. Caroling is done mostly by children. The children goes house to house to sing Christmas songs like Joy to the World, the First Noel, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolf the Red nose Reindeer, and others. Together with them are tanzans to make it more musical. On December 24th which is the last of the nine days many people go to church to go to mass. After the mass people buy sweets from the stalls like puto bumbong. Puto bumbong is colored violet which is sweet. As they go home many members of the family share a meal called the NOCHE Buena.
